You watching a TV show on TV doesn’t affect ratings at all unless your house is selected for Nielsen Ratings monitoring. And yes you would know if it was.

Here’s a video about how ratings actually work. But to summarize, they’re a very large estimate only based on several thousand households.

So unless you’re one of those households, the best ways to support a television show for you would be legal online viewing, buying merchandise especially DVD or iTunes sales, and even emailing stations to tell them what you think! Trust me, they will read it and if enough people send them the same message, they’ll at least consider it.
